The Fortune Tellers

Wednesday August 25, 2004

Hindsight has perfect vision, but foresight is somewhat myopic. There’s probably not a person alive who hasn’t said, “If I’d known this was going to happen I would have acted differently.” All of us would like to know what the future has planned for us, especially when we’re buying lottery tickets or trying to decide whether to take a new job that’s been offered. Since the beginning of human history, there have been people who attempt to peer into the future to see what may be waiting around the next bend. Every culture on earth has devised methods for this purpose, ranging from the simple throwing of sticks or the reading of tea leaves, to the more complex structures of the Tarot, astrology and I-Ching.

Kings and Queens have kept court astrologers on hand to determine if a fair wind blew over the land, a practice that has persisted in some countries to this day. We commoners also make use of fortune-tellers and shell-out money to have our palms read, to have a chart cast, or to have our cards looked-at, all in an attempt to bring certainty to an uncertain future.
