Geology, myth, hikers and noodles converge along Fossa Magna rift

One of the most compelling episodes in classic Japanese mythology is that of Amaterasu-omikami (sun goddess) shutting herself up in the Heavenly Cave. The goddess had become so upset at her younger brother Susanoo-no-mikoto's erratic behavior--he was on a terrible rampage, breaking down dikes and irrigation canals in the Sacred Rice Paddies, splattering feces all over the tables at the First Harvest Feast, and tossing skinned animals into the Sacred Weaving Hall--that she locked herself away in a rocky cave and refused to come out. As a result, all of Heaven and Earth were immediately plunged into cold darkness.
