Witch hunt tragedy

Tuesday November 9, 2004
As many as 27 Nigerians, mostly women, have died after taking a poisonous concoction administered by an herbalist. Women and men accused of witchcraft were gathered together, and those who refused to confess were forcefed the toxic mixture, and began dying a few days later.

The witchcraft hysteria in Africa has its absurd moments, too- a woman in South africa refused to take responsibility when her dog bit two girls, claiming, "My dog only bites witches."

Haitan students at Howard University put together a program to promote tolerance and understanding of the Voodoo religion, and clear up common misconceptions. Keep in mind that the writer of the article appears to have fallen asleep at some point, and makes a few false claims (such as the denial of animal sacrifice, and integral part of the religion) You can learn more about Voodoo (Vodoun) here.
