Oetzi the Shaman, Satanic Killings, Antiquities Hoaxes

Tuesday February 22, 2005

Remember Oetzi, the Stone Age man found frozen in the Italian Alps? The consensus now is that he was a shaman, and that his tattoos may have been a form of acupuncture for arthritis.
I'm just going to pretend I didn't read the "Mummy's Curse" segment and leave it at that. Sheesh. You can see some pictures of Oetzi here, or read about Shamanism here.

Andrea Volpe of "Beasts of Satan" was sentenced to thirty years in prison for the murder of a bandmate and his girlfriend. Although the murders are being touted as the result of an obsession with Satanism, it seems to me to be an outcome of the country's obsession with Catholocism- especially the emphasis on supernatural elements, demons, apparitions, the evil eye, and the usual superstitions that still plague Italy. The Vatican's response, of course, is to teach classes on Satanism and exorcism- more of the same.

I'll close with an off-topic but intertesting link to an article of antiquities forgery, which explores hoaxes from "Piltdown man" to "Ancient Norse" artifacts bearing runes from Tolkien.
