Sheela's Day, Fundamentalist Hypocrisy
Friday March 18, 2005
Happy Sheela's day, everybody. (If you want to see more pictures of Sheela and similar characters, check out "Satan in the Groin," which covers a whole range of "exhibitionist" figures in medieval churches. For Druids and other Celtic Pagans, today marks the first day of Fearn (The month of Alder)
A Middle School newspaper in Michigan flubbed a bit by allowing a pre-teen to proselytize for Wicca on its pages, but the response from the American Family Association (yes, the folks who brought us gay Spongebob) demanding an apology is completely out of line. Pointing out a Church/State issue is fine- but the "Wicca is evil, look at what one of them did" tack employed here is more than a little disingenuous. Yes, a Wiccan man did kill his foster daughter- but it has apparently escaped Pator Glenn's radar that a Fundamentalist believer like himself just blew away seven members of his own Church. When digging for horrific Wiccan crimes, the Pastor also mentions a teacher accused of child molestation- but he's apparently forgotten that a significant number of convicted molesters used to go by the title "Pastor."
