Feast of Luna, Interesting Times, Sacred Space
Thursday March 31, 2005
According to the Roman Calendar, March 31st is the feast day of Luna, Goddess of the moon (known to the Greeks as Selene). You can see some images of Luna/Selene here.
Remember the supposed ancient Chinese toast/curse "May you live in interesting times?" Well, things are definitely interesting. We're looking at the possible exit from the earthly plan of the Leaders of both the Catholic Church and the leader of the Religious Right in the US, Jerry Falwell.
The leader of an Islamic sect and some of his followers have been jailed... His big crime? Apparently, assuming some names of god and promising intercessory abilities. Oops.
Space in Rio de Janeiro's Tijuca Forest park is at the center of an interesting controversy. It seems a portion of the park has been commandeered by members of various faiths as a community "sacred space." Groups using the spot dubbed "Sacred Space" include members of Candomble and Wiccan groups, but it's not the believers that are the cause of the controversy- it's the damage done by non-biodegradable offerings and unattended candles. It should be interesting to see how this works out. On a related subject, here's a nice, informative profile of a Botanica and its owner.
