Convictions in Witch Persecution Case, Historical Treasures at Risk in Mecca
Friday July 8, 2005
Sentences have been handed down in the case of the young girl tortured as a "witch," both of the aunts will serve ten years apeice in prison, and deservedly so.
Big peices of history in the Muslim Holy cities of Mecca and Medina are being targetted by developers, including homes associated with the Prophet Mohammed. The ironic twist is that it is fundamentalist Wahabis who are refusing to allow the ancient landmarks to be protected from an onalught of hotels and apartment buildings, because to do so might be seen as encouraging "idolatry." The Prophet's house, an idol. The almighty dollar...no problem, it seems. I remember a crazy guy who used to taunt street preachers in Berkely. He'd disrupt their sermons by throwing dollar bils around, and holler "there's your god" as people scrambled to pick them up. I guess he realy wasn't so crazy after all.
He keeps the sacred ashes in a fruitcake tin. (no comment)
There's pun about singing for supper in here somewhere.
One hell of a "crop circle."
