Da Vinci Code Violence, Strange News

Friday June 23, 2006
The Da Vinci Code finally opens in Qatar to great success, but its first screening in Hyderabad had to be stopped due to rampaging Christians (calling themselves the "Christian United Front"), who smashed windows and tore up theater furnishings in a successful attempt to prevent movie goers from seeing the film. Not quite as bad as the incident in American Samoa, where a Theater manager was beaten.

Here's the sort of bizarre story that seems more suited for a weird indie film than real life- a woman is beaten to death by a mentally ill Kabbalah student sufering under the delusion that he is possessed by the Ari, sixteenth century Kabbalistic teacher Isaac Luria.

A federal judge won't stop the Secret Service from confiscating religious tracts designed to look like million dollar bills.

I don't know which is more strange- the worshippers who believe a disabled Indian villager is an incarnation of the god Hanuman, or the doctors who feel the need to explain that his 'condition' is a birth defect and not a divine manifestation.
