Intolerance in Afghanistan, Vatican Threatens Ordaining Women, Creation Museum, More Bad Religious Reporting

Monday August 7, 2006
Religious tolerance still has no place in the 'new and improved' Afghanistan, which recently ordered the deportation of hundreds of Korean Christians after it was rumored that a planned 'peace festival' would have Christian overtones. Afghan Sikhs are feeling the pinch, too, as some of the last holdouts prepare to leave their country.

Meanwhile, the Catholic Church isn't feeling diplomatic about women who want to be priests, warning a group of Catholic women that their souls are in peril if they continue to insist on ordination. Women are denied office in the Catholic Church on the assertion that Christ chose no female apostles. The presence of female apostles in the bible and the existence of female clergy in the first century are assiduously ignored, even as the Church faces an enourmous deficit in the number of male priests.

England's latest crime-fighting idea: pray! Perhaps if it doesn't bring the rain, it will help catch criminals?

Christians offended by scientific evidence of man's origins can now stay safely clear of any uncomfortable facts: Kentucky's Creation museum will adhere strictly to one literalist interpretation of Genesis with no icky evolution anywhere in sight. (Coming next: the Flat Earth & Geocentric Universe Museum!)

Wiccan widow Roberta Stewart has enlisted the aid of the First Amendment group Americans United for Separation of Church and State in her fight to get her husband a religious tomb marker. It has been nearly a year since her husband's helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan and the memorial spot which should bear his name and religious emblem is still blank.

Another example to file under 'a little knowledge is dangerous,' as gypsum found scattered around a California courthouse is attributed to Palo Mayombe, which is, according to this article, the 'dark side' of 'Santaria,' which 'integrates human sacrifice. ' Another example of rumor urban legend masquerading as research. (For the record, Palo is similar to Santeria, but is an independent religion. Like any faith, adherents of Palo come from many backgrounds. It also goes without saying that human sacrifice is not 'integrated' into Palo.)
