Mrs. Mallory Vs. Harry Potter
Predictably, Mallory is an evangelical Christian who admits she hasn't read the books she's been fighting these many months, and claims that doing so would be 'hypocritical.'
It seems that Mallory got her information not from the books, but from reading internet postings from other evangelicals who were also criticizing the books- many of whom seem not to have read the books themselves, if one judges by the variety of bizarre claims she's presented- that the books contain anything resembling Wicca or any other Pagan religion, that they contain human sacrifice, and that they are responsible for the school shooting epidemic (although she seems to feel it's irrelevant whether said shooters ever actually read the books.) She goes on to claim that the Harry Potter books are the 'first ever' children's books to positively portray witches or wizards, which makes me wonder if she read many books at all as a child.
Update: As of today, the books will stay...but I doubt we've heard the last from Laura Mallory.

As a long time Witch (who was, btw, raised as a christian), the claims Mrs. Mallory are making are absolutely ridiculous! I’ve read every single book in the series & no where in any of the books is religion mentioned. Not one single time! No human sacrifice, in fact no sacrificing of anything is contained in any of the books. Witches are good people, well true Witches are (I’m sure there are those out there who claim to be Witches that do harm to others… they are NOT Witches, they are crazies). A true Witch cannot harm another… period, ever, for any reason! In fact, we promote the healing of Mother Earth & all those who live upon her… even Mrs. Mallory! She needs to read the books if she’s going to condemm them, just to have her facts straight!
Thanks

I completely agree with Ladytree, I am both a witch and a fan of the Harry Potter books with no link between the two. It amazes me that someone can condemn something they admit they have absolutely no knowledge of.
Harry Potter is a series of books about PEOPLE struggling with their lives - and never mentions religion. Nothing in the books even remotely resembles treu Wicca and/or paganism - and certainly not human sacrifice. I am outraged that people like Mrs Mallory can accuse me of such things. If I said similar things about Christians then there would be outrage - but I would not say such things because not only are they not true but it is not my place to judge! Why can’t Mrs Mallory just let other people get on with what they enjoy? It’s not hurting anyone!
Let’s not forget that the kids in the Harry Potter books get off for *Christmas* vacation. And that in the first movie they explicitly show a scene of decorating the Christmas tree in the Hogwart’s dining hall!
I’ve read all of the Harry Potter books and I’ve seen all the movies. I’ve also read the Bible cover to cover over 20 times. I’d much rather have my daughter read Harry Potter, which has no human sacrifice, than have her read the Bible which has human sacrifice.
RELIGIOUS NUT
She has obviously never heard of The Wizard of Oz.
We really should thank Ms. Mallory, though. It’s because of people like her that the books skyrocketed to fame. Controversy is a surefire way to sell books. If one’s book is controversial, you know it won’t be long before it’s a best seller.
