"Only God Can Judge Me"

Thursday December 14, 2006
I must admit that while I'm generally a fan of body art, I'm not so much a fan of body art tv, so I missed the episode of tbs program "Miami Ink," which featured a mystery tattoo symbol, described as an Egyptian symbol meaning "Only God can judge me." This seems to have resonated with a lot of people, and I got a lot of inquiries about the symbol...

Well, I did finally get a glimpse of the image, thanks to BOG, and it was instantly recognizable- that's the good news. The bad news is, someone has taken a bit of license with the meaning. The symbol is a popular African adinkra symbol, one of many special symbols that evolved from Ashanti funeral cloth. It is called "Gya Nyame," and means "God alone" or the "presence of God." I suppose one could stretch "God alone" to arrive at the interpretation given on the show, but it wouldn't be terribly accurate- I'm afraid someone out there is permanently wearing a symbol that doesn't mean what they think it does permanently non-egyptian symbol. Oops!

When I saw the episode on Miami- Ink having to do with the tattoo in question I was so psyched to get it. I have several tattoo’s and constantly feel as if people are in judgement of me. So needless to say I was quite disaapointed that this was not the true meaning. Is there a symbol out there with a similar meaning? I am indeed a perfect canditate for such a symbol.
And thank you for your knowledge of such things. Please respond. :)

I also was exstatic about a tattoo that meant that. I have 2 tattoos with more to come as well as piercings, and I as well feel like people are very judgemental. I will ask again, is there a symbol out there with a similar meaning?

(6) Jennifer Rose Emick says:

There are a few bible verses that might apply, but no viusual symbols with that meaning. There are sopme that mean God judges (or is omnipresent), but none that warn against judging others.

Of course, there is no rule against cxreating one’s own symbol with that meaning- especially as so many people seem interested in the idea…

The all-seeing eye or the death’s head (memento mori) would be examples.

Presently watching the Miami Ink in question, and had to IMMEDIATELY do a search for the symbol. Having been a budding egyptologist as a kid, I’ve looked through a fair amount of Egyptian symbols, and that one on Miami Ink didn’t look at all right. So glad I found your posting!

K & K, a suggestion for a possible symbol is the greek alpha and omega. It isn’t very pretty, but the chapter where God (or was it Jesus? I dropped out of confirmation class) says “I am the alpha and omega” immediately came to mind. God is there at every beginning and at every end. Nobody else is. So nobody else’s opinion matters in the end. Just an idea… :)

I must be honest… When I saw the episode on Miami Ink about the European basketball player and his tattoo, I basically got obsessed with that symbol. It’s kind of a disappointment that it’s not really Egyptian but I still would love to get it tattooed on me.
