Dragged from Vallhalla
My friend may have been only half-serious, but it seems many are truly horrified by the idea- especially people who are perfectly content with the religion they chose for themselves. The posthumous baptisms began innocently enough, with Mormon converts looking to gain entry into heaven for their ancestors in keeping with the Church's teachings about the eternity of family. With genealogical research, however, one could potentially baptize a LOT of people- including historical figures, religious leaders, basically a large number of folks who wouldn't be pleased to discover their new status as Mormons. The best example so far would be Pope John Paul the second, who was baptized not once but four seperate times, which leaves more than a few catholics with a bad taste in their mouths. Ditto the Jewish descendents of holocaust victims like Simon Wiesenthal.
The Church defends the practice by claiming that the newly baptized are free to reject the baptism if they choose- so Kenn, if you're reading this, you're safe from afterlife beauracrats!

Hi!
If he dies a hero like he needs to to be accepted in Valhalla, I don’t think the mormons could overrule Odin on him anyway!
Still, it’s disrespectful- people know what is best for themselves- it’s worse than grave robbing.
This is just awful! I don’t understand how they can do this. Some people really have a lot of nerve! Definitely much worse then grave robbing, I would rather have my grave robbed!
I think this concept has been blown way out of proportion. Mormons don’t go around baptising dead people. They have to ask permission for that. And this only if the deceased in question are in the blood line. It is a sacred ordinance to connect one’s ancestry back to Adam. It forms a link, if you will. read the last verses in the last chapter of Malachi.
this beats any pagan human sacrifice ! if they are still practised, I mean.
It blows my mind that there are still people ignorant enough to think human sacrifice is even remotely part of Pagan practice. Pull your head outta your butt and do some reading.
Actually they have been known to do it surreptiously. My husbands family is Mormon and he has the same….well not fears because his God he doesn’t think will let a faithful servant go.Yes it is frustrating.I have also seen it in nursing homes where I have worked.I think personally that you should not worry about it because how are you going to be pulled into someones elses heaven or hell if you don’t believe in it?
I think Jill has a point there. I’m a pagan.. so when I die I’ll stay at the Summerland… even if my family wants to drag me to Heaven! O_ô
Well most people don’t believe that Pagans are sacraficing humans, I believe The point of the comment was not to suggest pagans actually sacrifice humans, rather that the comment about posthumous baptism is equally ignorant. Ignorance is bliss, however before posting comments and blogs about how fearful people should be of the Mormons, try to do some reasearch on Latter-Day Saints. I can send some LDS missionaries your way if you’d like.
