Satanic Panic, or "I was a Satanic Witch (No, Really, I Could Fly and Everything!)"

Tuesday April 3, 2007
Michael Nenonen of the East Vancouver Republic writes about the predictible regularity of the Satanic Panic cycle, with some interesting theorizing about why people are so accepting of these wild fantasies, and why they persist.

While we're on the subject of "here we go again," this week's news gives us not one, but two pastors recycling the Mike Warnke "I was a Satanic witch" routine. Baptist Pastor Gwan Garrison talks about how much he enjoyed "persecuting Christians," and he's sure to mention (with the amount of accuracy typical in these stories) his "Satanic altar" and his "crystals." It's light fare compared to some of these stories- no bloody sacrifices, no marriages to Satan- but there is a glowering cat and a high-voltage Satanic bible- and there is, of course, that ever-present character, the tirelessly persistent evangelical whose refusal to stop pestering the ungodly results in his miraculous transformation.

Mike Vinco's story is a little darker, and sillier. Mike tells a similar tale of Satanic spells, but un like Gwan, his dark spells actually killed someone (or so he heard). Mike also had a Book of Shadows (just like the one on "Charmed") but laments he couldn't shape-shift...

Being a former witch is extremely profitable. Mike Warnke did quite well duping the masses and bilking them for cash.

Looks like the next generation of former-satanists-turned-evangelicals lacks the gravitas of Warnke, however. At least, that’s my assessment after reading the articles.

I shiver every time such stories arise. Over here in Britain I remember the panics in the 1990s, with the British Parliament nearly duped into debating whether to ban ‘occult’ literature from homes with children. Some shops selling occult literature were even firebombed.
When claims of satanic abuse, etc, were finally researched open-mindedly the most mind-boggling misinterpretations were found. The child forced to eat dead animals - a tin of pasta shapes. The inverted cross - a kite. Forced to drink blood - the mother was old-fashioned and included the blood of the joint of meat in her gravy.

for the real story on Mike Warnke…he was outed by a Christian magazine, and the whole episode is fascinating. It also contains a few helps for bringing down future imposters.

I just hope Reisha realises that Satanism isn’t always, or even most commonly, about worshiping the devil… I suppose men do indeed have mildewed minds…
