St. George, Ras Tafari

Monday July 23, 2007
Today is the feast day of St. George, the dragon-slayer and patron Saint of England. St. George was an early Christian martyr, but later became a legendary figure, his story conflated with ancient hero stories. He is sometimes associated with the Archangel Michael. You can see some pictures of St. George along with quite a few dragons in the Dragon Gallery.

Today is also the birthday of Heile Selassie, aka Ras Tafari, viewed as the Messiah in the Rasta religion.

In the ancient Roman calendar, today is the first day of The Neptunalia, the feast of Neptune, god of the oceans and waterways. Curiously, the God was honored with shrines and picnics in the forest.

So what is the connection to Ras Tafari or Haile Selassie?

I agree with M.F: what the hell has the Turkish St. George have to do with the Ethiopian Ras Tafari/Haile Selassie?

It’s also Heille Selassie’s birthday, some text has gotten clipped from the post. Will behead the responsible gremlin and see about getting it restored asap. :-)
