Today is the feast day of Obatala, the chief of the Yoruban Orishas, venerated in the Santeria and Candomble religions (In Vodoun, he is known as Damballah), the primordial serpent. Obatala is the oldest of the Orishas, and all of the other Orishas are emanated from him. Obatala is the first artisan weaver and potter who created man out of clay.
