Dosojin Festival

Friday January 25, 2008
The Romuvans of Lithuania showed that they know how to honor the gods in style- but dancing around the bonfire sounds a bit tame compared to the Shinto Dosojin Festival an alcohol fueled, epic battle for the temple.. Certainly, a lot more fun than a boring Sunday sermon. Every January, dozens of ridiculously drunk, costumed participants square off at the Nozawaonsen shrine for a furious battle with branches and torches . The village's younger men are tasked with defending the shrine from torch wielding elders, using only pine branches. Sounds like a blast.
