Travolta Losing Faith in Scientology?

By , About.com Guide   July 29, 2009

Follow me on:

John TravoltaA variety of articles are circulating this week about John Travolta's possible questioning of the Church of Scientology, reinforced by a story several weeks ago in which he publicly acknowledged his deceased son Jett was autistic, a condition the Church doesn't tend to recognize.

Of course, many of these articles lean heavily on the usual anti-Scientology rhetoric, calling it controlling, a cult, and so-forth.

Those points are largely immaterial here. What Travolta is going through appears to be a crisis of faith, which happens in people of all faiths, particularly in the face of tragedy. According to this article, Travolta may be feeling that the Church promised things it can't deliver - in this case relief from illness for his son.

That is something everyone should be mindful of, regardless of their religion. When someone makes claims, are they reasonable? And over time, do you see reinforcement or contradiction of those claims?

The press is going to harp about how the Church is probably threatening to release information about alleged homosexuality if Travolta leaves, which again undermines the pain that Travolta is going through irregardless of any such threats. Travolta was a true believer, and now that belief has been shaken, and that's painful and scary for anyone.

Of course, all of this is dependent upon whether these reports are even true. Travolta himself continues to publicly state that there is no conflict between him and the Church.

As much as I dissagree with scientology, I really feel for Travolta. How impossibly hard to loose a child – no one should outlive their children. And if he is struggling with his faith, who can blame him> Lets hope he has people around him willing to listen and take a little of his burden.

Whatever the rights and wrongs Scientologist will always tell you that Scientology is a religion. This warns you that at some later stange of involvement there may be a conflict between your religion and theirs. There is no deception by the Scientologists in this matter, and they should be given the credit for their honesty.
