I'm old enough to remember the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, when people were going to jail after fearful neighbors became convinced they were part of a vast Satanic conspiracy.
Much of the problem was sheer hysteria. People heard unfounded rumors and presumed them to be true. Other people then heard about these stories and became fearful that horrible things must be happening in their town as well and dutifully sought out and accused whoever seemed likely.
But there is a much more sinister component to the Satanic Panic: people who outright lie about their experiences with Satanism, the occult, or other alternative religions. This article gives a good summary of just one such person: there are many others.
I’ve read Mike’s books and seen him live. His story is a complete crock by all counts, but he is a very dynamic and entertaining speaker. I suppose that’s part of his appeal (in addition to the natural human interest in the macabre). Considering the timing and success of The Satan Seller, one has to wonder if it was the Satanic Panic that created Mike Warnke, or Warnke that create the Satanic Panic. The two are so completely intertwined that it is impossible to say which came first.
