In the United States, people are guaranteed to the right to believe what they want.  They are also, generally speaking, allowed to practice as they want.  However, that allowance does not allow believers to break laws that apply to others, and that's where people tend to get confused.  The first amendment doesn't say you can do whatever you want.  It says the government cannot do something that targets your religion.  Read more on how religion and law interact.
