Vaisakhi, Canadian Kirpan Case
Wednesday April 13, 2005
Today is Vaisakhi, the Sikh solar New Year. Sikhs today will celebrate this major festival in honor of 10th Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, and the founding of the Khalsa Order in 1699.
Monday the Canadian Supreme Court heard arguments in the case of a Sikh teen whose Kirpan (a ceremonial dagger) was banned from school. As initiated Sikhs are required to carry a Kirpan, this has become an issue for Sikhs across North America.
