It's for Your Own Protection!

Tuesday July 19, 2005

An Indian government will soon pass a law supposedly intended to protect women from witchcraft accusations. How does it work? Easy- it makes witchcraft a jailable offense with a minimum sentence of five years. Harassing a witch gets you five years, too- but identifying one only gets you three. (That oughtta teach 'em)

It's worse in Benin, where a surge in infanticides follows the rising witch hysteria- instead of harassing and burning old ladies, they root out witchcraft by smashing "baby witches" against rocks.

In yet another case of misplaced rage, skinheads in London have vandalized cars at a Sikh temple in London. Sikhs, of course, are not Muslims.

Interesting item: Papal seals found down an ancient toilet.

In the ancient Egyptian calendar, today is the birthday of the goddess Nepthys.
