Raud the Strong

Friday September 21, 2007

In their temples Thor and Odin
Lay in dust and ashes trodden,
As King Olaf, onward sweeping,
Preached the Gospel with his sword.

In many Asatru calendars, today is the Day of Remembrance for Raud the Strong, honoring the death by torture of this folk hero (and 'pagan martyr') for his refusal to convert to Christianity. (Most Asatruar comemmorate this day on Jan. 9.)

Christian history, of course, paints Raud as an blaspheming evil magician who mocked good Christian King Olaf. ;-)
