Beltane, Papal Product Endorsement, Weeping & Bleeding Icons

Wednesday April 26, 2006

A Leicester Pagan describes the Wiccan festival of Beltane.

If that "year and a day" thing works out, Wiccans who want a cheesy Vegas wedding need not fear- Elvis can do your handfasting, too.

Naughty television ads will be banned in Poland while the Pope visits. I suppose we must assume his delicate eyeballs can't take what's fit for the rest of us. Worse is the jockeying of manufacturers for "product endorsement" from the Pontiff. Apparently, while the Pope won't actually go so far as to endorse a product, he might just happen to wear a pair of designer shoes or sport a nifty pair of sunglasses, therefore hopefully spurring the faithful to stop wasting their money on orphans and spend it on designer duds and luxury cars.

Speaking of that which offends Catholic eyes, the Da Vinci Code poster mentioned yesterday will be coming down.

The Judge who decided the Da Vinci Code plagiarism trial was apparently either a bit of a fan or taken by his own cleverness- it seems he inserted his own "code" into his ruling.

Pop star Madonna, who decries people who make fun of her allegiance to the Kabbalah Centre, apparently has no qualms about offending nearly everyone else. In her newest stunt, she reportedly plans to "crucify" herself on a giant, crystal studded crucifix.

A woman in Malta claims the statue of Mary she purchased from a pet store is weeping tears of blood. Another statue of Mary, in Bogota, is reportedly weeping actual tears. Not to be outdone, a Russian Orthodox Church claims that not one, but six icons of Jesus are oozing blood and myrrh with miraculous healing powers. No word yet whether any of them endorse Prada loafers.

So when can we expect to see the novel based on The Smithy Code, and will Mr Justice Smith sue for copyright infringement?

Well, one thing we do know, and that’s that there will be a “behind the Smithy Code” published four years in advance…
