Happy Dianetics Day?
Wednesday May 9, 2007
Today is one of four "days of celebration" for Scientologists: Dianetics Day, marking the first publication of Dianetics, the mental health manual that forms the basis of scientology practice. The day is often marked by volunteer activities, sometimes with protests against psychiatry and pharmaceuticals.
It's been a hard couple of years for Scientologists. Their most visible member is at the center of a number of controversies (and about twice as many rumors) because of his outspoken defense of his beliefs, a fate that befalls many celebrities when they are too open about their religious beliefs. Detractors of Scientology seldom go about muttering about dark secrets anymore, but aren't averse to crashing Hollywood events dressed like "Lord Xenu," or accusing celebrities of signing up because it's an 'easy' religion with 'few demands.'
