Code Craziness, Wiccans Face Discrimination, Jesus Rocks (and Roots)

Thursday May 11, 2006
The wailing and gnashing of teeth against the Da Vinci Code is reaching a frenzied pitch. While offended Christians in the US are mostly content with boycotts and "debunking Da Vinci" websites, Christians in India, Jordan, and the Philippines are demanding a government ban. If that's not enough to get attention, there are the activists in Mumbai burning Dan Brown in effigy and calling for hunger strikes- a "fast unto death" if the government does not capitulate and ban the film. That's right, they're willing to die to prevent others from watching a movie.

Although the Department of Veterans Affairs promised a Wiccan war hero's widow a decision before the end of February, Roberta Stewart is still waiting to hear whether or not her husband's memorial plaque will bear a Wiccan emblem in time for Memorial day. Stewart is not the first person to request the pentagram for grave-markers, but the Government is strangely resistant to the idea, even though the symbols of many smaller religious groups are already recognized.

Roberta Stewart isn't the only Wiccan feeling slighted. When two Louisiana Boy Scouts admitted their Wiccan faith in a dicussion on religious diversity, they found out they were just a little too diverse. Both boys were unceremoniously booted from their troop, after it was decided they couldn't do their "duty to God" if that God were the wrong god (or, presumably, goddess).

By now you've probably seen the most recent appearance of Jesus in the side of a large rock in Mexico, but the better likeness is in an Englishman's asparagus patch. (and then there's this)

(1) Keith W. says:

I find it quite interesting that the name of the church sponsoring the Scout Troop in the Anacoco story is Holly Grove United Methodist Church. Holly Grove. Sounds distinctly Pagan to me.

I drove by Oak Grove Baptist the other day. It’s hard to get more Pagan than “Oak Grove”.

I wonder if these xtians even realize the depth to which Pagan roots have penetrated the soil of the church.
