Virgin Hammy, Zeus Worship Legalized in Greece, Kneeling Controversy, Creepy Christian Teens

Tuesday May 30, 2006
This week's miraculous apparition of the Virgin Marry? In a slice of ham.

Speaking of miracle food, the missing cinnamon bun shaped like Mother Theresa may not be gone forever.

Paganism is making strides toward recognition in Christian strongholds- it is no longer against the law to worship the "Old Gods" in Greece, where previously only Christianity, Islam, or Judaism were legal to practice, after a landmark ruling from an Athens court. The priests of the reigning Orthodox Church aren't so charitable:

"They are a handful of miserable resuscitators of a degenerate dead religion who wish to return to the monstrous dark delusions of the past."
There are also rumors that Odinism will be officially recognized in the UK.

Pope Benedict, the man who is supposed to have a direct line to God, is apparently as clueless as the rest of us, and asks where God was while Hitler was murdering millions of Jews.

The newest controversy in the Church apparently has nothing to do with the Da Vinci Code, but whether or not it is sinful to kneel during Chruch services.

Another Christian controversy in Texas isn't so silly. At issue is whether or not your Church has right to publicly air your sins in hopes that you'll mend your ways- even if you've left the church. A Dallas couple believed their sins were between them and their Pastor. This particular Church, however, does things differently, using social pressure to "correct" sinful behavior- if a stern talking to from the Pastor doesn't put you on the straight and narrow, they hope a little public embarasment is called for. Naturally, such embarassment (which they rationalize as biblical) can't be forstalled by leaving- like the Mafia, when you're in, you're in forever.

Rev. Max has some unique perspective on the dangers of the Christian Youth movement and the right-wing "culture warriors" who are building their own Army of God. (See also: "Republichristians")

Without a doubt, the absolute highlight of this story is the following quote:

“But Watermark’s bylaws say a member “may not resign from membership in an attempt to avoid such care and correction.”

When a church holds that kind of power over people, they need to be investigated.
