Ironic Punishment, Ancient Pagan Traditions,
Friday July 21, 2006
Now this is a strange story- a death row prisoner scheduled to be executed for the murder of a fellow inmate is seeking clemency from the Supreme Court. What makes the story strange is that the prisoner at the time of the murder was a pagan, a member of an Asatru religious group; his victim was another member he and another inmate killed in the name of that religion, because they felt he was not suffiiciently "dedicated" to the Gods. Ironically, religious judgements came into play again in his trial, when Christian jurors used bible passages to justify sentencing him to death. So a man whose religious beliefs led him to judge and execute another was judged in the same manner himself.
On the lighter side of things, there are a lot of interesting old pagan traditions making news again, from the ancient tradition of well-dressing and "beating the bounds" to and the re-emergence of the nine-hundred year old "Burry Man."
