Madonna's Parka Controversy, Smells Like a "Virtuous Woman," Battle Over the World's Ugliest Jesus

Friday August 11, 2006
Pop star Madonna is once again the center of controversy in Italy- not for last week's mock-crucifixion, but for an image of the singer found on a billboard posted on the scaffolding outside the Duomo. While there's nothing terribly controversial looking about the picture of Madonna wearing a down parka, officials are furious that the image is touching their cathedral in the first place. (Perhaps they would prefer a Burqa?)

Another member of the Church of Body Modification makes news with a job discrimination lawsuit. What makes suits like this difficult for members is that this Church has no Gods and no dogma other than it's support of its member's freedom of choice when it comes to appearance.

A Baptist group whose ministry is at odds with the Bush Administration's position on Cuba has been slapped with a large fine for carrying on "tourist activities" in the country, a fate which commonly befalls groups who disagree with Bush's Cuba policy.

What does a Christian smell like? If a novel retailer gets his way, they will smell like "Virtuous Woman," the world's first "Christian perfume." No word yet whether it contains frankincense and myrrh or if it will be followed by Christian lingerie or lipstick....

'Christian education' is at the center of a legal battle between a California school and the California University system. The school and its supporters allege the UC system's admissions policy unfairly discriminates by not allowing credit for some courses taught by the schools, including science courses that teach creationism rather than evolution, etc.

Another silly controversy is 'raging' in West Virginia, where an expensive legal battle is brewing for residents intent of doing whatever it takes to keep one of the ugliest images of Jesus ever created firmly pasted to the walls of the Bridgeport High School- an important educational goal. The battle to keep the faded, chipped religious icon in the school is expected to cost upward of $100k.

Meet Louis, crowned King of Ireland in an ancient Pagan ceremony. (Did we mention Louis is a goat?)

Speaking of ancient weirdness, the Scotman delivers yet another fascinating look at Scotland's unique brand of mythology, including claims that Scotland is the lost Isle of Atlantis, the birthplace of Jesus' children, and the true hometown of King Arthur...and that's just for starters. Another Scotman story not tio be missed: The alchemist who thought he could fly
