The Witches of Halloween

A reporter is relieved of his 80s-era misconceptions about witches and tries to pass the buck:

"When you think of Wicca you think of witches on broom sticks flying over houses putting hexes on people with the aid of black magic or Satan or both, admit it."

I must admit: Wicca has never made me think of witches flying about on broomsticks. I haven't seen many gnostics sporting pentacles, either.

On the bright side, Jim Walsh delves a little deeper, so he can be forgiven for a few odd comments about pentacles.

Gnostic Gripes

Scholar Bruce Chilton's fussing about "Secret Mark" attacks Neo-Gnostics as naive for attempting a gnosticism that embraces the earth and gender equality. I'll take a stab here and assume that Chilton's orthodoxy is also free of the notions about gender and worldly involvement that plagued it in the first century, so what gives?
