British Airways Backpedals
Wednesday November 29, 2006
Even after prevailing in court against an employee who sued for the right
to display Christian jewelry, British Airways is facing such a storm
of public animosity over the issue that it has agreed to "rethink" their
unevenly applied ban on religious symbolism. Among the complaints were those
of prominent politicians and clergy, including the Archbishop of Canterbury,
who threatened to divest the Church of its stock in the company. The ban currently
applies to religious jewelry such as crosses, but not to headcoverings or other
symbolic clothing, meaning that Sikhs or Muslims are largely unaffected, but
Christians, Pagans, and others who wish to express religious affiliation through
jewelry are not allowed.
