There are so many battles over holiday symbols in public squares, it's surprising that town governments have time to get any real work done. One of the stranger recent examples is in Fort Collins, Colorado, wqhere city officials have decided that a Christmas tree, that most secular of symbols (stay with me) is an acceptable public decoration, but a
menorah, being wholly religious, is not. When questioned, the council members who voted against the menorah let slip that it wasn't Judaism they had a problem with...it was those
79 unnamed "other" religions they were worried about:
"If we were to open it up to a menorah, then everyone wants to get involved."
You see, by allowing a menorah, who knows what other symbols they may be forced to allow. Just imagine the horrors of a multicultural holiday display- first a menorah, then, what, a yule log? Quick, someone, hide the children!
Update: It could be worse.
