Chicken, No Goat

Thursday March 22, 2007
The Texas city of Euless, which recently decided to ignore Supreme Court directives on religious freedom by banning religious animal sacrifice (barbecue sacrifice is still acceptable- you can kill and cook a chicken, you just can't offer it to God first) is now trying to wiggle out of a court challenge by offering a "settlement"- under their proposal, Lukumi (Santeria) priest Jose Merced would be allowed to sacrifice chickens, but not goats.

I have no idea what was discussed by city officials before they made this offer, but it strikes me as stunning religious ignorance- they appear to think that one is as good as another. No explanation is given why they appear to believe one is as good as another- this is like telling a Catholic priest he can offer communion wine but not bread. They seem to have given little thought to Merced's actual needs or even to have done any investigation of the religion itself. In Santeria practice, different occasions call for different sacrifices, from a basic offering of honey or rum to livestock for an initiation ceremony.
