"Closet Witches" (aka, Satanic Panic for Profit)

Wednesday February 28, 2007
I stumbled on this gem quite by accident, a description of a vintage Satanic Panic relic from 1987, a taped interview by the in famous Jack Chick of the arguably more infamous Rebecca Brown and a supposed satanic witch known only as Elaine. These two were staples of the "vast Satanic conspiracy" genre, and were so popular I was given not one, but TWO copies of their books by evangelizing relatives.

If the names aren't ringing any bells you've still likely encountered Chick's work- his anti-witch, anti-Catholic, and Masonic (among other things) tracts have been stuffed into telephone booths, bus seats, and New Age tracts for more than thirty years. Dr. Rebecca Brown (aka Irene Bailey) was once a real medical doctor, until her obsession with 'demonic illness' and penchant for hospital room exorcism got her terminated. (Her version of the story, of course, is quite different)

The story hyped by Chick for years begins with Brown's employment at a hospital run by Satanists. Not just a handful of Satanists, mind you, but an entrenched conspiracy, an enclave of Satanic witches whose mission was (apparently) to murder their patients. Brown describes doctors she worked with making Satanic incantations while she prayed over patients, and how she is finally driven from the hospital by demonic attack (aka, illness). The other character in the sagas is Elaine Moses, Rebecca's sidekick.

Elaine's story is even more bizarre than Dr. Brown's: she was sold into spiritual slavery by unscrupous doctors who repaired her birth defects in exchange for some of her blood (because a doctor has no way to get any blood from a patient, they have to tell elaborate lies to get some!) The blood, of course, is used to give Elaine fantastic Satanic powers and she goes along merrily using these powers undetected until she joins the powerful Satanic conspiracy known as the Brotherhood* at summer camp. She then continued on to a high-powered career as a nurse, which gave her many opportunities to meet rock stars, travel to the Vatican, and visit Mecca, Egypt, and other exotic locales. She eventually becomes the bride of Satan in an elaborate ceremony (apparently the dark one has a thing for midwestern girls)

All the while, Elaine and the other Satanists, with the aid of the Masons and Catholics, are working to take out God's servants, including an attack on Jack himself, during which time Elaine is even asked by an angel to 'accept Jesus, and she of course declines. It is the pious doctor who brings Elaine to Jesus, and they begin a ministry in the heart of the Satanic conspiracy- in Indiana.

What really gets me is that the real-life story is almost as bizarre as Rebcca and Elaine's fantasy. Brown, of course, lost her license to practice medicine, accused of prescribing herself massive doses of painkillers, which she claimed to need to medicate the many diseases she spiritually 'shared' with Elaine and other afflicted. She was eventually accused of abusing Elaine, with whom she reportedly shared a home- and a bed. Elaine's husband, described in Brown's books as a Satanist who left Elaine when she found Jesus, actually sued fro divorce many years earlier on grounds of cruelty. (No word yet if Satan has sought a divorce as well) Rebecca eventually married a man with almost as colorful a history as her own,

The strangest part of the story, however, is that despite continuing to publish her bizarre tales, Brown has become something of a pariah in fringe evangelical communities. Not because she makes outlandish claims, but because many believe the doctor herself is a Satanic witch in command of a host of demons, whose mission is to harm and discredit God's real warriors.

Rebecca herself has dropped most of the Satanic talk and now blames demonic curses for every ailment, material spiritual, and physical- curses which are picked up from demonic gods disguised as toys and stutes, and can apparently be removed with the simple application of cooking oil. Rebecca's website doesn't contain any hint of her Satanic coven-battling days, but you can still read her & husband Daniel's bizarre acounts of meeting the ACLU's personal demon and other sincere, believable stories.

You mock Christian’s in your hate… You single them out to try to make look so bad… However, it is common for those in every religion to ’see’ spirits, so why hassle Christians that see in the spirit realm. I don’t see you verbally attacking Hindu’s, Islam, Buddhists, and Wiccans saying they see spirit believed to be ‘dark.’ Your just biased and full of anti Christian rhetoric… Your a Christian basher!

Namaste and blessings, Carrie.

It is true that those of us in the non-xian spiritual world appear to be “bashing” xians while leaving most of the other faiths you mention (Buddhists, Hindus, Wiccans) untouched. There is a reason for this.

No adherent of those other religions have ever told us non-xians that we are following “false gods” and “going to hell”, nor have Buddhists, Hindus, or Wiccans accused us of worshipping satan and murdering innocent animals or humans.

We only reciprocate the scorn that is heaped upon us.

I am Pagan. I study a Wiccan tradition. You are a xian. You study the words and deeds of Jesus of Nazareth. I do not think your beliefs are wrong and shall not condemn you for them. Equal respect and treatment from followers of Jesus would be welcome.

Blesséd be,
Scolaí

I saw some commentary about the outlandish stories of some people who are clearly emotionally disturbed, if not downright psychotic. I missed the part where you tried to make Christians look bad, though.

Guess I need to pay closer attention.

I was relieved to learn that “satanic cult stories” are now part of past history. I have not been to inclined to “get into” esoteria lately. It was a part of my “seeking, youthful” days. I still have a passing interest in theology, or I would not be here.

What was so dangerous about the “anti-satin” folks was their ability to sometimes penetrate into legitamate work being done in our Corrections System in regard to forensic work. They threw lots of “red herring” on trails of important legal work being done to solve morbid stuff like serial homicide, etc. If only those sad, abberant folks had belonged to Satin Cults. Maybe some of them had. Then, it would have been easier to find a cause of such terrible crimes being done.

I’m glad those judgemental naysayers have been exposed for what they are. I hope we don’t go into another witch-hunt of intolerance as we need to fight some very different value systems on a global level. Unfortunately, we are not free of religious extremism. It will undoubtably, bring about the end of Planet Earth if we all continue in this direction.

Wow. I wonder if she was the doctor that lived in Las Vegas a bunch of years ago. That doctor, a woman, flipped out and destroyed her house, bashing big holes in the walls to get at the demons that were tormenting her. She was taken by paramedics who were called and found her nearly dead from starvation or dehydration. I think she was severely schizophrenic. We lived donw the street from her. My ex and one of my sons went in and saw the house and thought it had been vandalized by bad guys. Creepy.
I don’t believe in a devil or the force of evil other than it’s the lack of good or Godness. S

The lord Jesus Christ said “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and behold I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and death.”(Revelaton ch1 v18).Jesus Christ loves all of mankind and suffered and died on the cross to pay the price for our sins. BUT. on the third day he ROSE FROM THE DEAD!!!! He lives today and forevermore. The Lord Jesus calls all people to him for salvation. He calls Wiches, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Catholics, Protestants and all other faiths and none to recieve his wonderful gift of salvation and eternal life in Heaven free from all pain and sorrow and full of joy unspeakable. I Realize that a person’s religeon is very close to a person’s heart. I firmly believe in a person’s right to practice and evangelise their faith whether or not I agree with it.I do not poke fun at any person’s religeon, but I Humbly in love plead with you; accept Jesus christ and his priceless gift. I don’t know the truth about Rebecca and Elaine. God the eternally righteous one knows all so I leave the judjement to him.
