Controlling the Message (China Vs. Falun Dafa)
Thursday April 5, 2007
I have to admit I've never quite understood exactly what it is about the Falun Gong that makes the Chinese government so crazy, or why they would go so far to prevent a nonviolent ideology from spreading. About eight years ago, after a number of public meditation events, the sect was banned in China. The government maintains that Falun Dafa is a dangerous and violent, yet has never been able to offer much evidence- which may be because the sect is intrinsicly nonviolent, and with its central practice based on Tai Chi, just how much of a threat can they be? Enough for China to imprison every member they find, to ban evey mention in print, on the internet,* or in public speech. Falun practitioners have been imprisoned and tortured, and there is good evidence that they may be serving as 'donors' for forced organ transplant schemes. Having forced most protesters in-country to silence, they also apparently take pains to silence them outside of China as well. The most recent disturbing news comes from the wife of a Chinese diplomat, Jiyan Zhang, who claims to have evidence that Chinese officials are trying to prevent a Falun-based television station from joining Canadian cable networks. Has any such campaign ever worked to silence an opposing viewpoint?

There are at least two reasons why the Chinese government is afraid of Falun Gong:
1. Practitioners do not meditate upon the government — its authority, its omnipresence, and its virtual diety. They meditate upon something that promotes individuality, and that is anathema to the Chinese government.
2. Practitioners are non-violent. And they are quite serious about it. They will not fight. And that means they will not go to war. Not even if the government tells them to do so. That pretty much puts paid to the ambition to rule the world.
Both reasons (and there are probably others) deny the all-powerful “authority” of the government. Chinese leaders see Falun Gong not only as competion to them, but as an insult to what they perceive is their destiny…complete and unquestioned domination over everyone else on earth and beyond.
