The small Catholic-based religious group of followers of Santa Muerte appear to want to distance themselves from accusations that they are a "death cult." The group venerates Santa Muerte, the Grim Reaper recast as a saint, one of many "folk saints" not sanctioned or condoned by the Rome. The new image of the folk icon, who represents the angel of death, is a pale female angel in a golden robe, believed less frightening to outsiders and less appealing to those who might be attracted to the saint for the "wrong" reasons- some followers of "Saint Death" believe the angel can dispatch one's enemies, an idea considered absurd by the group's leadership.
