The Witches of Halloween

It's October, close to Halloween, and we all know what that means- it's time to drag the local Wiccan out of her hole and see if she sees her shadow will consent to be interviewed as the annual Halloween Witch.

The New York Daily News manages to be fairly respectful, with not one but two interviews, even if they did neglect to capitalize Wicca on one of them. They manage to avoid most of the pitfalls associated with these sorts of articles, although on reading it, one still wouldn't be terribly sure what Wicca was all about.

This local paper version also isn't awful, except for informing the public that witches don't make potions with dead frogs...very helpful.

A Kentucky reporter lets his interviewee give a history lesson, but forgets to check any of the details. She also helpfully informs us that Wiccans can't shoot sparks from their fingers. (Darn!)

Here, we hear what witches believe and don't believe. This one, at least.

That last story was quite the read. Hopefully her Mark Antony will arrive and hand her an asp.

Gods, why is it that the media has to uncover the biggest crackpot on the planet and parade him/her around as the representative for the rest of us? Yes. Acceptance for our beliefs is SO much easier to achieve when we claim to be the reincarnation of Cleopatra…
