Wiccan? No Thanks, Then...

Tuesday January 29, 2008
A former Canadian beauty queen has been rejected as a pageant judge over her "occult activities." Miss Canada Plus Stephanie Conover, a Wiccan, was asked to participate as a pageant judge for the Miss Toronto Tourism (say that three times fast) pageant, but after she submitted a biography that mentioned she reads tarot and practices Reiki, the invite was swiftly rescinded. Both activities were deemed to be "witchcraft" and therefore too unsavory for a nice, wholesome beauty pageant- and unacceptable to god, as well. Rejecting her from pageant judging was apparently not enough, either- the rejection letter she received from the Pageant Director not only denounced her "dark" activities, but urged her to "turn from these belief systems and will repent from her practice of them."

Thanks Denise, Jeff!)

there’s another example of the narrow minded right wing…………she doesn’t need to be in a stupid beauty contest, true beauty (wiccan and otherwise) comes from within!!!!

I have never understood why any woman felt the need to have her beauty judged by a bunch of HORNY old farts anyway..

She has the right to be wherever she wants to be! Discrimination is discrimination… and this is a slap in the face to anyone who has beliefs or practices anything!

OH MY! This type of ignorance is unexceptable, i can’t believe that some people still live in the burning times. Do they even know what being a Wiccan (witch-pagan) is about. Well, I guess Karma will be kicking some butt over this one. And may I say: Goddess Bless this woman a thousand times over for her strong reserve in this situation.
In love and light,
Mary (High Priestess)

In my opinion if someone runs an event and decides that event should conform to their personal standards - since its their time and their money its their choice.

They have that choice because the smiley face of facism => Political Correction - doesnt rule the world.

Left wing right wing youre all the same. Products of simple social darwinism trying to use the moral high ground to scramble over each other like rats.

How does a japanese form of faith healing (God the Irony) and a simple method of divination make her a wiccan or a witch and so worthy of some pseudo neo-pagans outrage anyway?

It’s always the same story! Where is our Freedom of Religion? ( Are they supposed to have that in Canada too? )To commenter number 1, it’s not just Hillary we are going to have to flee from! How about all that christian malarky the republicans are spewing fortrh? What do you say to Amsterdam?

Seamus, she clearly refers to herself as Wiccan in the articles.

I love the way left-wing, right-wing has to be injected into a discussion on stupidity & discrimination! Shelley: FYI, Canada is profoundly liberal. Discrimination knows no political agenda nor is it relegated to any particular religion; it is bourne of ignorance, we simply fear that of which we know little. I believe this is exemplified in the pagent director’s comment. The only way to begin to overcome it is to own it. You denounce this act of discrimination yet I see it in the comments re: left/right wing! Clean your own house first.

As for injecting left/right wing garbage into the discussion, check your history folks. Neither side is more “correct” than the other, it’s a matter of methodology, belief systems & what one considers core values, how one best achieves the goal. Each side has good points and bad, as the Founders understood far better than we do.

It’s important here to note that the Miss Toronto Tourism pageant is not operated by or even affiliated with the city of Toronto.

Also, over at Pagan/Wiccan, one of my readers mentioned that he thought two of the founders of this pageant may be the same people who formed a big anti-gay group a few years back. I’m still looking for concrete evidence of that, but if it’s true, these people may as well forget EVER getting any more pageant sponsors.

hmm… what now? people really blow sometimes, you know? i get sick of the same kind of discrimination here in minnesota. mn is terribly christian in most areas, especially the city i live in. and it’s not fun to be cut out of something just because you’re different. i guess it’s time for the canada witch trials, and minnesota will follow suit.

It is sad to see, that someones personal belief belief could change a chance for someone. I am a High Priestess and I believe in God and the Goddess,My life has not always been easy. When our 3rd chakra owns who we are the impossiable opens up to us in the world. Honor yourself and others personal boundiers. Close minded people do not have the comprehension to understand. Blessings

It was really good to see that most of the sponsors of the event pulled their support after this came to light. Canada is a country in which diversity is embraced, and not discouraged.
