Ahriman
(Angra Mainyu)
In Zoroastrian mythology, Ahriman or Angra-Mainyu (both mean "angry spirit") is the adversary of Ahura-Mazda. Ahrihman embodies the forces of evil and darkness in the universe. Ahriman was created together with Spenta Mainyu, the original "Holy Spirit." By consciously choosing evil, it was Ahriman who brought death, disease, and discord into the world. In earlier mythologies, Ahriman and Ahura-Mazda were the divine twin sons of Zurvan (Time).
Pronunciation: ahr-ih-men (noun) Alternate Spellings: Ariman, Ahrimen, Ahraman
