Isaac Luria (Ari HaKodesh, "Holy Lion")
Isaac Luria was an influential Rabbi of the fifteenth century, believed to be the greatest Kabbalistic teacher of the era. The name "Ari" means "Lion" and is an example of a Notariqon, or acronym, for "Elohi Rabbi Isaac," the Godly Rabbi Isaac. Luria studied under Moses Cordovero, and while he was an oral teacher who left few writings, he was a great influence in the formation of kabbalistic doctrine; in particular, his concept of emanations.
