Asclepius was the son of Zeus and Corona, the god of healing and medicine. Once a renowned human physician, Asclepius was eventually deified. According to legend, his healing powers were so great he was destroyed by the Zeus lest he use his powers to make men immortal.

The wand of asclepius , often confused with the Caduceus wand of Hermes, is the true symbol of the medical profession.

The symbol of a serpent entwined staff also appears in the biblical book of Exodus, wherein Moses is instructed to erect a brass pole with a serpent; whoever looked upon it was healed.
