Circle
Refers to the sacred space defined before a magical ritual, a practice used in Ritual magick and in Wicca. The practice is derived from medieval magical and witchcraft practices, and is shared by folk magicians in several cultures. "Cating the circle" refers to the ritual creation of a magical circle, usually with a consecrated knife or sword. A Wiccan/Neopagan circle is used to define ritual space and protect those within from negative influence. The circle of ritual magic is used to create protected space for the mnagician, often during spirit evocation. Incidentally, both the words "circle" and "church" are derived fromn the ancient scots word "kirk," the pagan term for a circular temple.
