The word Druid, the name of the Celtic Priestly class, is compounded from the Gaelic words for oak and wise- a Druid was one who was "Oak Wise," guardian of the doorway.*

In both the ancient Celtic society and in modern Druid groups, the Druid is one of the tripartate divisions of the social order. The Druid represents the legal class, the judges and lawmakers.

*See: The Tree of Life for more informnation on Druidry's relation to trees.
