In Palo Myombe and Santeria, the Egun are the spirits of the dead, the ancestors. They are comparable in some ways to the Ghede of Vodou. A Lukumi practitioner keeps two altars; one for the Orishas and one for the Eggun, who include one's ancestors, priests and priestesses of the religion who have passed over, and one's spiritual guides.

In rituals, the Egun are propitiated before the Orishas. They are honored with prayers, offerings of food and drink, and songs.

In Palo Myombe, the Egun comminicate via divination and through spirit mediums to aid the living with spiritual and temporal affairs.

Pronunciation: Eh-goon • (noun)
