The Albigensian practice known as endura is one of the most misunderstood rituals of the Albigensian gnostics (Cathars). The endura was a ritual fast, undertaken by the ascetic Parfaits as a purifying ritual. The endura was often undertaken by members who had received the consolamentum, in preparation for their new lives as ascetics, or in some cases, by those who had not received the baptism until near death. It was not uncommon for Cathars facing execution by the inquisition
In at least one recorded case, the endura was undertaken by a dying Cathar and continued until death. It was also common among cathars facing torture and death at the hands of the Inquisition, and in later days, among the dying who had not had access to the rites of confession due to the great dangers faced by the remaining Parfaits. The purpose of the rite in this case was not of suicide, but to ensure against corruption so close to death.
