The Essenes were the pre-Christian era monastic Jewish group associated with the Dead Sea Scriolls. Not much is known about the Essenes, except that they were an apocalyptic, messianic sect; that they lived communally, sharing all possessions in common, and that they avoided animal sacrifices and adhered to a rigorous solar calendar.
