Originating from the same Greek root as geometry, Gematria means number, and specifies a type of kabbalistic numerology. In the Hebrew mystical tradition of Kabbalah, each letter of the Hebrew alphabet has a specific enumeration, and each number a divine meaning, a practice derived from the ancient Greek practice of isopsephia.

Using gematria to calculate the numerical relationships between words and phrases is believed to reveal the hidden relationships between words and concepts, and to uncover intentionally and unintentionally coded references in scripture.
