In Sanskrit, Gurmukh means turned toward or facing the Guru. In the Sikh religion, Gurmukh is an ideal state of being, akin to sainthood, and refers to one who conquers the ego and evil impulses to become "God-centered" or illumined. Qualities exhibited by the Gurmukh include selflessness, the ability or desire toward spiritual teaching, etc. Conversley, one who is egotistic, ego-centered, impulsive, etc., is known is manmukh, self-centered.
