Hermes Trismegistus (Hermes thrice great) is the central figure of the mystical tradition known as Hermeticism, as portrayed in the corpus of literature known as the Hermetica. Hermes trismegistus is a composite figure, a combination of the Greek Hermes, the Roman Mercury, and the Egyptian God Thoth. At one time Hermes was esteemed as a prophet to the gentiles and accorded as much weight theologically as the Hebrew Moses, and cathedrals throughout Europe still bear his image.
