Hierophant
In the ancient mystery cults (Eleusinian, etc.), the hierophant is an initiator,
a possesor of occult knowledge. From the Greek, hieros (holy), phanen (light)
- revealer of the sacred. Today, the term is used with the same meaning
to denote an initiator in a number of magickal traditions.
The
Hierophant is also the title fifth card of the Tarot. The emblems depicted
on the card are shared by St. Peter, the Greek god Janus, and the Mithraic
deity Zurvan. all of whom share symbolic guardianship of doorways and initiation.
