Ishtar was the Assyrio-babylonian Goddess of war, love, and fertility. Ishtar was known to the Phoenicians as Astarte, and to the Sumerian Inanna. The best known myth of Ishtar relates her journey to the underworld to redeem her slain son/consort Tammuz, a story echoed later in Easter mythology.
